About our School.

As the oldest high school in the heart of the city of Cagayan de Oro in the province of Misamis Oriental,Region 10, the Misamis OrientalGeneral Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) takes pride in being the pioneer in high school education through academic and technical vocational excellence, outstanding research, public service, sports implementors and improved facilities.
Established in 1909, MOGCHS started as a small Cagayan campus with only very few students those who cannot afford to avail quality education in Manila. Over the years, MOGCHS has made a reputation for itself as a public high school that produces scientific and creative outputs of the highest quality which receive both regional and national recognition. In fact, MOGCHS has been known as the Home of the Champions. Today, MOGCHS has expanded its population to almost 14,000 students in four year levels purposely to help our poor deserving students avail a free quality education. Education programs of MOGCHS helps nurture the intellectual and cultural growth of the Filipino students specifically in areas of Cagayan de Oro and Misamis Oriental. Most of its faculty have doctorate degrees and have master’s degrees. The rest are working on their graduate studies. Some although remained as teacher 1 but they are as effective and as brilliant as doctorate teachers.
To date, MOGCHS has produced more than 1,900 fourth year graduates every year and more than 40% from among the graduates are expected to successfully finish different college courses in nearby schools and universities in the fields engineering, physics, agriculture, chemistry, psychology, medicine, commerce, business management and many other courses. But MOGCHS strength does not lie in its academic pursuits alone: With the Technology and Livelihood Education subject, Technical and vocational courses were given emphasis to prepare our students not only academically but technically. In fact, many of our graduates who pursued tech. voc. education in college did succeed working abroad and have sufficient income than those graduates of 4-5 year courses.
After its centennial celebration, MOGCHS aims to further improve its academic and research programs and tech.voc. implementation to maintain standards same as known public and private high schools throughout the country. MOGCHS hopes to meet the demands of the changing times and take its place as one of the best in the region, and eventually, the Philippines.

History of MOGCHS

The Misamis Oriental High School (MOHS), now the Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High school (MOGCHS), was founded through the initiative of the late Don Apolinar Velez y Ramos, the first elected Governor of Misamis province that was then composed of the present provinces of Misamis Oriental and Misamis Occidental. The school was formally inaugurated on December 15, 1909 with an impressive array of national officials attending the ceremonies. The prominent guests included the American Governor-General William Cameron Forbes, Speaker Sergio Osmeña Sr., Hon. Manuel L. Quezon of Tayabas, hon. Jose Clarin of Bohol, Hon. Manuel Tinio of Nueva Ecija, Hon. Dionesio Jacosalem of Cebu and Tomas Earnshaw of Manila.

Insular Government and conferred with the education officials and finally had an audience with the American Governor-General William Cameron Forbes. The Governor-General however, agreed to release only P16,000.00 for this project estimated to cost P32,000.00 with the province raising the half or a counterpart fund and setting up a sizeable site for school building and athletic field.

After almost three years of intensive fund campaign Governor Velez was able to put up the first building in the present site of the Misamis Oriental General comprehensive High School. The site is located in Lot. No. 426, cad. 237, Case 2, Cagayan Cadastre with a total area of 7,3629 hectares.

On the north and northeast side of the building where formerly Marcos Sports Center now the Pelaez Sports Center were the gardens which were owned by several families – the Abrios, Caballeros, Corrales, Dalmans, Damiles, Galons, Mabulaya, Pacaliogas, Ralutos, Salusos, Raypons, Saarenas, Tabiques, Velez and Yabuts. They sold their lots for a very low price as their contribution to the project to Ex-Judge Nicolas Capistrano who did not hesitate to exchange the whole area with less valuable lot in Agusan, Misamis Oriental.

Classes were opened for intermediate grades and for first year high school. The second, third and fourth year classes were added as soon as soon as funds became available. The first Filipino teachers were Esperanza Roa- Ongpin and Juanita Fernandez-Neri. The school had its first graduation in 1922 with Pilar Gaerlan, Laureana rabe- Canoy, Milagros Roa Solidum. Messrs. Francisco Abejay, Sotero Bacas, Roque Chavez, Ernesto Fernandez, Daniel Galarrita, Clemente Galindo, Pedro Pimentel, Federico Roa and Juan Uriarte as the first graduates. The early high school course included the intermediate grades but in 1926, due to an increase in enrolment and lack of school building, the intermediate students were separated from the high school administration.

The early high school course included the intermediate grades but in 1926, due to an increase in enrolment and lack of school buildings, the intermediate students were separated from the high school administration. The school had its first graduation in 1922. The first American Principal was Henry Smith, and the last was William Goldrich. The first Filipino principal was Simeon Vale (1928). On June 1, 1965, Republic Act 4247 converted the MOHS into a national high school to be known as the Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School. On July 1970, late afternoon classes were opened under the auspices of the Provincial Government and continued up to school year 1981-82. However, the Schools Division Superintendent of Misamis Oriental strongly recommended the conversion of the said school into a Provincial High School, to be supported by the province. It became known as the Misamis Oriental Provincial High School (MOPHS), late afternoon classes, occupying the same school site as MOGCHS. In 1990-91, MOPHS was transferred to Balingasag. Include sports and technology for students' total development

If MOGCHS’s culture of excellence is also to apply to sports and technology, shouldn’t they get the same support that other fields get? Supply of laboratory and training equipments, books and references, participate big local and national events, teachers’ trainings, field trips, every afternoon’s sports practices and workouts.
